Anna Quincy Churchill (1884-1971)

Anna Quincy Churchill (1884-1971) was a physician, one of the few female MDs at the time. She served on the faculty of Tufts University School of Medicine and School of Dental Medicine from 1918 to 1954.

Anna Quincy Churchill completed studies at Smith College and Radcliffe College before earning her medical degree from Tufts University in 1917.

She interned at the New England Hospital for Women and Children and was appointed to the Tufts School of Medicine and School of Dental Medicine in 1918, where she enjoyed a long career. In addition, she taught at the Sargent School of Physical Education and was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science as well as the American Association of University Women. The Anna Quincy Churchill Prize in General Biology, which she established in honor of her parents in 1954, is awarded by Tufts University annually for excellence in the study of botany and zoology. Churchill was profiled on the Tufts Facebook page in 2022 during Women’s History Month. The heading for her writeup declared “She Could See Worlds in a Cell, and Boundless Promise in Her Students.”
