March 7, 1870, fifty women, led by Sarah Grimké (1792-1873) and Angelina Grimké (1805-1879), gathered at the Everett House in Hyde Park to cast ballots in defiance of the women's suffrage prohibition.
Angelina Grimké Weld (1805-1879) was an abolitionist and women's rights activist. She and her sister Sarah (1792-1875) used their firsthand experience of slavery to advocate for these causes.
The State House honors abolitionists Angelina and Sarah Grimké, reformer Dorothea Dix, and other pioneers featured in the Notable Women of Boston mural.
