Bashka Paeff

Bashka Paeff (1894–1979), the “Subway Sculptor,” created Boston’s Boy and Bird fountain and the WWI Sailors and Soldiers Memorial in Kittery, Maine.

Known as the “subway sculptress” for creating clay models during her work as a toll collector, Bashka Paeff (1893-1973) was a Russian Jewish immigrant and a celebrated artist.

The Public Garden, opened in 1837, features sculptures, fountains, and seasonal plantings, including four fountains designed by women.
