Chew Shee Chin

(1899 - 1985)
Garment Worker

Chew Shee Chin (1899-1985) moved to Boston in 1918 from China. She later helped found the New England Chinese Women's Association, which helped Chinese women make friends, solve problems, and collect donations.

After choosing an American to have an arranged marriage with, Chew Shee Chin moved to Chinatown in Boston. She and her friends founded the New England Chinese Women’s Association that provided support and community to other Chinese women just arriving in Boston. Chew Shee Chin and the other founding women were very proud of the organization because it was run entirely by women and they could carry out the project they were passionate about.

In 1941, as the United States entered WWII, Chew Shee Chin began working as a stitcher in a garment factory. She was excited to be working outside of the home and earning her own money. With her newly earned money, Chin and her husband moved out of Chinatown to Brookline as one of the first Chinese families to live in Brookline.
