Golde Bamber

Golde Bamber (1862-1951), born in Boston, studied at Boston University and Simmons College. 

She encouraged Lina Hecht to fund a settlement house for immigrant Jewish youth, becoming its director. The Hebrew Industrial School (H.I.S.) began in the North and West Ends in 1882, enrolling over 1200 youths in its first five years for vocational and academic courses. After Hecht’s death, Bamber renamed H.I.S. to Hecht Neighborhood House.

Built in 1929 and funded by James Storrow’s family, the West End Boys Club housed libraries, club rooms, a gym, and basketball courts. Now it is offices for Mass General Hospital.
