Ruth Roman (1922-1999), born to Lithuanian-Jewish parents in Lynn, grew up in the West End. A member of the Elizabeth Peabody House, she eventually acted with major film stars such as Kirk Douglas, James Stewart, and Gary Cooper.
Built in 1929 and funded by James Storrow’s family, the West End Boys Club housed libraries, club rooms, a gym, and basketball courts. Now it is offices for Mass General Hospital.
