Grove Hall Library – FREE & No Registration Required
Celebrate Black History Month with the Boston Women’s Heritage Trail (BWHT) at a free community informational meeting about the Cedar Grove Memorial Project. BWHT is committed to uncovering, sharing, and preserving the stories of Boston’s women, amplifying their legacies by marrying public art and historical initiatives. We honor the lives of 133 women, who were residents of the Home for Aged Colored Women—a historic site on Beacon Hill founded in 1860 in Boston by a group of abolitionists to provide support to elderly Black women in need of housing and financial aid. These women are buried in individually unmarked graves at the Cedar Grove Cemetery and their legacies are unknown to the Greater Boston community.
Sparked by Joyce Linehan, the Cedar Grove Memorial Project has gained momentum and expanded with a grassroots network of community change agents. Through collaboration with the local activists, community members, scholars, and artists, BWHT has established an official Steering Committee that guides our work and ensures that our process reflects the diverse constituencies we serve. Lead artist Ekua Holmes and public intellectual Dr. Karilyn Crockett undergird our efforts with their creativity, artistic expression, and sound archival research. .
We welcome community members of all ages and backgrounds to come and learn about the history and future plans for this important project!
