Gladys Locke (1887-1945) was a writer and a librarian. She was born in Dorchester, attended Girls Latin School, graduated from Boston University, and received a master’s degree in library science from Simmons College. She began writing as a young child starting with fairy tales and moving on to plays. She taught in Milford, New Hampshire, before obtaining a job as a cataloger at the Boston Public Library. Locke began to write mysteries, usually set in an English country house, and made regular trips to England and Scotland, the settings for her books. She published ten novels between 1914 and 1935. Locke was active in both the First Parish Church of Dorchester and the Republican Party and also was a member of the Boston Society for Psychic Research.
